Ayahuasca for Healing Grief: Moving Through What Loss Has Left Behind
Ayahuasca has shown to be a profound healing modality for unprocessed grief that is stuck and has not fully moved.
Grief doesn't always move on its own — ayahuasca may help it finally flow
Grief is not a problem to be solved. But when it becomes stuck, something deeper is needed. Unprocessed grief doesn’t always look like sadness. It can look like numbness, chronic low-level depression, an inability to fully invest in life, or a persistent sense that something essential is missing.
Many guests arrive at Harmonica carrying losses they haven’t been able to fully grieve — because life kept going, or others needed them to be strong, or the grief felt too vast to safely enter. Ayahuasca works at the root level — creating conditions where what was lost can be genuinely mourned, honored, and eventually integrated into a life that continues to hold meaning.
What our guests experience
Over five years of facilitating retreats, we’ve welcomed many guests carrying grief in all its forms — acute and decades old, loudly present and quietly buried. What we hear most often after the retreat:
- Suppressed grief finally being felt and moved through
- A sense of genuine connection with who or what has been lost
- The weight beginning to lift
- Love and connection to life again
These aren’t guaranteed outcomes. But they’re common ones, and they tend to hold when integration is taken seriously.

How we support you if the mind becomes loud during ceremony
Grief in ceremony can be intense, tender, and at times overwhelming — a fullness of feeling that many guests describe as the most honest emotional experience they have ever had.
Supporting someone in those moments takes genuine sensitivity and emotional depth — both of which our team has developed over years of this work.
Tell us about your situation before you arrive. The more we understand you as a person, the better we can hold space for whatever comes up.
Ayahuasca for grief healing, is it the right tool for you?
Grief is one of the most natural reasons one comes to drink Ayahuasca, as Ayahuasca is a holistic medicine that can help you sit with the emotions underneath and start to process.
Where more care is needed is when grief has progressed into severe clinical depression or suicidal ideation requiring additional stabilization before deep ceremonial work is appropriate.
Every application is reviewed individually by our medical team. If we don’t think the timing is right, we’ll tell you — and we’ll suggest what might help you get there.
Ayahuasca is not a substitute for professional medical or psychological treatment. It is not a cure for any physical, mental, or emotional condition, and individual experiences vary significantly based on each person’s unique history, intentions, and circumstances. All prospective participants are required to complete a thorough health screening prior to attendance, as ayahuasca carries real risks for individuals with certain medical conditions or those taking contraindicated medications.
We cannot guarantee specific outcomes, and any experiences shared by past participants may not reflect your own. Ayahuasca may serve as a meaningful piece of your personal healing journey — offering insight, clarity, and transformation — but its effects are most lasting when supported by ongoing integration and a genuine commitment to growth over time.
