Ayahuasca for OCD: Addressing the Anxiety Beneath the Compulsion
Ayahuasca for OCD has shown to be a meaningful healing modality for individuals whose intrusive thoughts and compulsive patterns have persisted despite medication, therapy, and years of effort.
OCD can feel like your own mind working against you — ayahuasca may help change that
OCD isn’t about being overly tidy or particular. For most people living with it, it’s an exhausting cycle of intrusive thoughts, mounting anxiety, and compulsive behaviors that temporarily relieve the pressure — before the cycle starts again.
Many guests arrive at Harmonica having tried ERP therapy, and years of cognitive work — and still feel hijacked by their own mind.
What's actually driving the cycle
OCD is fundamentally an anxiety disorder. The intrusive thoughts aren’t the problem — the relationship to them is. The nervous system has learned to treat certain thoughts as catastrophic threats requiring an urgent response.
Ayahuasca works at the root level — creating conditions where the underlying anxiety can be met, processed, and released rather than continuously managed.
What our guests experience
Over five years of facilitating retreats, we’ve welcomed guests carrying OCD patterns across a wide spectrum — from intrusive thought loops to rituals that had taken over hours of their day. What we hear most often after the retreat:
- A quieter mind - less urgency behind the intrusive thoughts
- More space between the thought and the compulsive response
- Reduced anxiety that had been fuelling the cycle
- Self - worth independent of professional success
- A clearer sense of self not being defined by a condition
For guests with OCD, ceremony can amplify the inner critic and intrusive thought patterns before they quiet.

How we support you if the mind becomes loud during ceremony
For guests with OCD, ceremony can amplify the inner critic and intrusive thought patterns before they quiet.
Supporting someone in those moments takes genuine sensitivity and emotional depth — both of which our team has developed over years of this work.
Tell us about your situation before you arrive. The more we understand you as a person, the better we can hold space for whatever comes up.
Ayahuasca for OCD, is it the right tool for you?
OCD exists on a wide spectrum, and readiness matters. Ayahuasca can surface and temporarily intensify anxiety before it resolves — which is only productive when there is enough stability to work with what arises.
SSRIs commonly prescribed for OCD require a careful tapering process before a retreat is safe. Severe OCD with very limited daily functioning may benefit from additional stabilization first.
Every application is reviewed individually by our medical team. If we don’t think the timing is right, we’ll tell you — and we’ll suggest what might help you get there.
Ayahuasca is not a substitute for professional medical or psychological treatment. It is not a cure for any physical, mental, or emotional condition, and individual experiences vary significantly based on each person’s unique history, intentions, and circumstances. All prospective participants are required to complete a thorough health screening prior to attendance, as ayahuasca carries real risks for individuals with certain medical conditions or those taking contraindicated medications.
We cannot guarantee specific outcomes, and any experiences shared by past participants may not reflect your own. Ayahuasca may serve as a meaningful piece of your personal healing journey — offering insight, clarity, and transformation — but its effects are most lasting when supported by ongoing integration and a genuine commitment to growth over time.
