Ayahuasca for Migraines: Exploring What Lies Beneath the Pain
Ayahuasca is an area of growing interest for individuals with migraines. For those whose condition has resisted conventional treatment, and are starting to ask what else might be contributing.
Migraines are more than headaches — ayahuasca may help address what's underneath
Anyone who has lived with migraines knows they are not simply bad headaches. They are neurological events that can take over hours or days — disrupting work, relationships, and the basic ability to function — often with little warning and limited relief.
Many guests arrive at Harmonica having cycled through medications, dietary changes, and specialist consultations — and still living in fear of the next attack.
The Indigenous Perspective: Headaches = the spirit is asking to be heard
In the Kamsá Biyá tradition within which Harmonica Retreat operates, physical symptoms are understood as the body’s language — a signal that something in the broader system of a person’s life is asking for attention.
Chronic migraines, in this worldview, invite inquiry into what is being carried in the mind and nervous system — suppressed stress, unexpressed emotion, a life lived at a pace or intensity that the deeper self cannot sustain indefinitely.
What our guests experience
Over five years of facilitating retreats, we’ve welcomed guests with severe migraines that had disrupted their lives… What we hear most often after the retreat:
- significantly reduced stress
- Release and process suppressed emotions
- Reset and calibrate thenervous system
- Finding deep rest and stillness within
These shifts have created an increased sense of well being in various participants.

How we support you if the mind becomes loud during ceremony
Guests arriving with chronic migraines are encouraged to come with curiosity rather than expectation. The intention we suggest is not “stop my migraines” but rather “help me understand what my nervous system has been carrying and what it may need to find more ease.”
The retreat environment itself — the removal from daily stressors, the quality of rest, the stillness of the natural setting — often begins to work before the first ceremony. Many migraine guests notice a shift in their baseline tension simply from being here.
Ayahuasca for migraines, is it the right tool for you?
Chronic migraines are not in themselves a contraindication for this work. Many guests find the retreat environment provides meaningful nervous system relief even independent of the ceremonial experience.
Certain medications commonly used for migraine management — including some triptans, beta blockers, and antidepressants prescribed for migraine prevention — require individual review before a retreat is safe. Our medical team will assess your specific situation in detail.
Every application is reviewed by Kevin Zapata, MD. If we don’t think the timing is right, we’ll tell you — and we’ll suggest what might help you get there.
Ayahuasca is not a substitute for professional medical or psychological treatment. It is not a cure for any physical, mental, or emotional condition, and individual experiences vary significantly based on each person’s unique history, intentions, and circumstances. All prospective participants are required to complete a thorough health screening prior to attendance, as ayahuasca carries real risks for individuals with certain medical conditions or those taking contraindicated medications.
We cannot guarantee specific outcomes, and any experiences shared by past participants may not reflect your own. Ayahuasca may serve as a meaningful piece of your personal healing journey — offering insight, clarity, and transformation — but its effects are most lasting when supported by ongoing integration and a genuine commitment to growth over time.
