Sergio Henao - Lead Shaman
Education, Training & Lineage
Sergio's shamanic training comes from the Kamsá Biyá tribe in Sibundoy, a region renowned throughout Colombia for its abundance of medicinal plants beyond ayahuasca. He studied under Maria Concepción Chindoy and her son Taita Miguel, who began cooking ayahuasca at just eight years old and deepened his knowledge with the Siona tribe—widely regarded as holding the deepest ayahuasca tradition in Colombia.
At Harmonica, we honor both the Siona and Kamsá lineages, weaving together their distinct wisdom and approaches. Before becoming a shaman, Sergio was a philosophy professor on a personal search for meaning. This unique background allows him to bridge intellectual understanding with the embodied wisdom that can only come through years of working with the medicine.
Philosophy
Sergio's approach is grounded in patience and respect for the medicine's timing. He often reminds participants not to rush their process—a balance for Westerners who arrive seeking instant transformation. He views ayahuasca as a tool for deep introspection, what he calls *auto conocimiento*—knowledge of self, through self.
Safety is non-negotiable in Sergio's practice. He maintains a strict no-risk policy, only serving ayahuasca to someone when he's absolutely certain of their wellbeing. There are no compromises when it comes to participants' health. His philosophy honors Mother Nature as humanity's oldest teacher, the source we can turn to for healing our neuroses and difficulties.

Sergio brings an intuitive, attentive presence to ceremony that participants often describe as deeply reassuring while being non-intrusive. His affinity for music and sound healing sets his ceremonies apart - he works with 10-15 different instruments beyond the typical guitar, drum, and harmonica, creating rich sonic landscapes that guide the healing journey.
As a father of two, Sergio understands the responsibilities of nurturing and protection on a personal level. Beyond his ceremonial role, he's responsible for the leadership of the retreat center and cultivating the chemistry within the team - ensuring that everyone works together with shared intention and care.
